The placement of heavy loads in a vehicle affects the car's centre of gravity, and thereby its steering and driving qualities. When the load is placed in front of the car's original centre of gravity, the car becomes nose-heavy and will seem understeered. When the load is placed behind the car's original centre of gravity, the car becomes tail-heavy and will seem oversteered. A trailer or caravan attached to the car may also affect the car's steering and driving qualities to a large extent, depending on the tongue weight. If the tongue weight is too high, the car becomes tail-heavy and oversteer may occur more easily, while if the tongue weight is too low the vehicle becomes unstable.
