Question 28 of 1002

You are driving in slippery conditions. What is correct regarding the distance to the vehicle ahead?

Justification

The 3-second rule is only a rule of thumb, and in many cases 3-seconds will not be sufficient distance to the car in front. A greater distance is required e.g. when:

The roads are slippery (as in this question)

Driving at high speeds (above 80 km/h)

The vehicle behind you is not maintaining a sufficient distance to you

The car behind you is larger/heavier than your own vehicle (as the braking distance will be longer) The car behind you is larger/heavier than your own vehicle (as the braking distance will be longer)

Options
I should drive with a distance of at least 4-5 seconds
I should drive with a distance of at least 2 seconds
I should drive with a distance of at least 3 seconds
Drive with a distance of at least one second and be prepared to brake
