Question 934 of 1002

You are driving in slippery conditions. What is correct about the distance to the vehicle ahead of you?

Justification

The basic rules of traffic in the the Road Traffic Act state that a driver shall show consideration and be alert and cautious so that they do not cause damage or risk.

The 3-second rule is only a rule of thumb, and in many cases 3-seconds will not be sufficient distance to the car in front. A greater distance is required e.g. when:

The roads are slippery (as in this question)

Driving at high speeds (above 80 km/h)

The car in front is not maintaining a sufficient distance to you The car in front is not maintaining a sufficient distance to you

The car behind you is larger/heavier than your own vehicle (as the braking distance will be longer) The car behind you is larger/heavier than your own vehicle (as the braking distance will be longer)

Options
It is sufficient with a distance of 3 seconds
I should drive with enough distance that there is no danger of running into the vehicle in front should it slow down or stop
It is sufficient with a distance of 3 seconds if I am prepared to brake
It is sufficient with a distance of 3 seconds if the car has ABS
