Question 382 of 1002

You are driving at 60 km/h on snow-covered roads. A child slides out onto the road 25 meters ahead of you. What should you do?

Justification

In dry summer conditions, the braking distance in case of an emergency is about 18 metres if the speed before braking was 60 km/h.

In winter conditions, the braking distance is normally four times this.

It is expected that you will not be able to stop in only 25 metres, and you should therefore concentrate on braking and maintaining control of the vehicle at the same time.

Options
Brake in a controlled manner and try to steer away
Perform an emergency brake
I can brake normally, as the braking distance is shorter than 25 meters
Use the horn and brake hard, hoping to stop
