Question 504 of 1002

You are on a motorway and see cars entering from an acceleration lane. What should you do?

Justification

Entry onto a motorway is often through a slip road or dedicated acceleration lane. You should use the acceleration lane to adjust your speed to the surrounding traffic to safely merge onto the motorway.

Drivers on the motorway are obliged to ease the entry onto the motorway by adjusting their speed and if necessary change over to left-hand side lanes (provided this can be done safely). Additionally, drivers on the motorway should make sure to keep enough distance to the vehicle in front that other road users may safely pull into the gap between them.

Options
Flash your headlights to signal that you want to help traffic enter from the acceleration lane
Ease the entry for cars in the acceleration lane by moving over to the left hand lane
Change your position only if the merging rule applies
Maintain a steady speed and position to support predictability
