Question 944 of 1002

When should you normally signal when changing lanes?

Justification

It is stated in the traffic rules that the driver shall give a sign for the guidance of other road users when changing lanes, so that they may adjust their behaviour accordingly. You should therefore give signs enough in advance for other road users to recognise and react in time.

To make sure other road users have time to respond, you should signal at least 5 seconds before changing lanes.

Options
approx. 25 seconds before a lane change
At the latest when you start to change lanes
5 - 8 seconds before you start to change lanes
approx. 15 seconds before a lane change
