Question 870 of 1002

How should drivers behave towards cyclists?

Justification

Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act, also known as the 'basic rules of traffic', states that a driver shall show consideration and be alert and cautious so that he does not cause damage or risk, and so that other traffic is not unnecessarily obstructed or inconvenienced.

You should therefore be patient with other road users and show extra caution when passing vulnerable road users.

Options
Be patient and accept that cyclists also have rights
Cyclists have to give way to you, so you don't need to be cautious
Use the horn well in advance so that cyclists have enough time to get out of the way
Show consideration towards those that follow the traffic rules, but not towards those that break them
