Question 19 of 45

Why do you have to turn your head and look to the side before you change lanes on the carriageway?

Justification

There is an area on each side of the car that cannot be seen in the mirror

The area directly behind and to the side of a vehicle is called the blind spot. Even when checking your mirrors, you are unable to see this area, and you therefore need to turn your head slightly to check your blind spot before changing your position on the carriageway.

In the example below, the driver's blind spot is marked in red.

Options
When you have looked around, you do not have to give way when changing lanes
It is the safest way to indicate to the car behind you that you want to change lanes
There is an area on each side of the car that cannot be seen in the mirror
The traffic rules require direct observation when changing lanes
