The sign is a type of give-way sign, and indicates that oncoming traffic must give way. This sign is normally posted on narrow roads where there is not enough room for two cars to pass each other.

Traffic travelling in the opposite direction will see the following sign (see below), indicating that it is prohibited to continue onto narrow stretches of road if this should hinder oncoming traffic.
